Ah, as the crisp chill of autumn breezes in, bidding farewell to summer warmth and heralding frosty winter nights, you might be tempted to hibernate. Yet London, with its active and ever-vibrant art scene, insists we do otherwise! After all, Our Five Exhibitions In London To See in September 2023 are knocking enticingly at the city’s cultural door.

In the spotlight, amongst the Five Exhibitions In London To See in September 2023 is ‘Between the Seams. Curated by the ever-insightful Larry Ossei-Mensah and Paul Anthony Smith, this isn’t just a showcase but a cerebral take on ‘interstices’. While most of us view interstices as merely gaps or spaces, our discerning curators elevate it, suggesting it embodies a social construct, a personal ideology, or even a lens through which we consume art. Deep, right?

But don’t rest your laurels just yet! Just as you’re soaking that in, the art powerhouse, the legend Marina Abramović, takes the helm at The Royal Academy of Arts. Celebrating her first major solo survey in the UK, it’s not just any exhibition. It’s an ode to an internationally renowned Serbian performance artist and Honorary Royal Academician. If ever there was a ‘do not miss‘ tag on an art show, it would be this!

If you thought we were done, think again. We whisk you away to the atmospheric Gasworks, where Trevor Yeung unveils his first UK solo marvel. A cornucopia of botanic ecology, horticulture, photography, and installation, Yeung’s exhibition is a metaphorical magnifying glass into the intricate web of social relations.

Now, gear up to be enthralled by the fascinating world of Generative art at Gazelli Art House. Delve into the fascinating universe of Generative art. “GEN/GEN: Generative Generations” is not just an exhibition; it’s an epochal saga of six decades. Spanning all three floors, the gallery pulsates with digital art’s rhythm, perfectly marrying technology with mathematical expression.

And if by now you’re thinking, “Surely, that’s it?” you’re delightfully mistaken! To ice our art-filled cake, New York artist Will St. John bedazzles at London’s Saatchi Yates. A visit through his years studying Renaissance painting across Florence and Europe, St. John’s canvases are a melange of the fierce and the delicate. From Drag Queens to Trans models, these masterpieces are eloquently paired with delicate porcelain figurines, trinkets, and echoes of a bygone era, all basking in the glory of classical painting.

So here are our Five Exhibitions In London To See In September 2023

So, if you’re ever wondering how to indulge your senses this September, you know where to be. London’s not just serving art; it’s a veritable feast! So here are our Five Exhibitions In London To See in September 2023. Bon appétit!

Between the Seams

Between The Seams expands the concept of ‘interstices’ beyond its basic definition as an intervening space. For the exhibitions, the curators view interstice as a framework that could take the the form of a social construct, a personal ideology, a mechanism by which we engage with art or a descriptor for an aspect of an artwork itself. Ossei-Mensah and Smith endeavour to utilise the idea of interstices or the in-between spaces as a forum to interrogate notions of hybridity, memory, migration, colonialism, culture, identity, peronal narratives and the seen and unseen.

Trevor Yeung: Soft ground

Gasworks presents Soft ground, the first UK solo exhibition by Trevor Yeung (b. Guangdong province; lives Hong Kong). Yeung’s work uses botanic ecology, horticulture, photography, and installation as metaphors to understand social relations. Preoccupied by systems of control, he often uses plants as cyphers, borrowing from their structure, care, and maintenance to think about intimate and personal experiences. Intermingling plant, animal, spectator and participant, Yeung’s work prompts us to consider how emotional and behavioural conditions in our everyday life are determined.

GEN/GEN: Generative Generations

Gazelli Art House in collaboration with tech partner Verisart is thrilled to introduce their first co-curated exhibition GEN/GEN: Generative Generations, taking over all three floors of Gazelli Art House’s central Mayfair gallery. This exhibition continues the gallery’s longstanding interest in and promotion of digital art, intertwining with the historical angle of the gallery’s program.

Following Gazelli Art House’s The AARON Retrospective, and ahead of a major 2024 museum survey, the gallery has deepened investigations into Computer Art pioneer Harold Cohen’s practice by aligning his work with three of his peers – Ernest Edmonds, William Latham, and Stephen Willats – while recontextualising these works through an array of contemporary generative artists.

GEN/GEN: Generative Generations is a group exhibition spanning six decades, featuring works from: Loren Bednar, Darien Brito, Sougwen Chung, Harold Cohen, Brendan Dawes, Ernest Edmonds, Licia He, Tyler Hobbs, Ben Kovach, William Latham, Rhea Myers, Piter Pasma, Monica Rizzolli, Melissa Wiederrecht, and Stephen Willats.

Will St. John at Saatchi Yates

This September, Saatchi Yates will present the debut solo exhibition of New York artist Will St. John, opening Wednesday 13 September and on view until Sunday 22 October. Will St. John spent years studying Renaissance painting techniques in Florence and around Europe. He brings these skills to his community of Bohemian New Yorkers. With a rigorous artistic style and approach to image-making, St. John’s meticulously crafted paintings exude delicately fierce character.

Reminding us of the French Rococo tradition, his works echo the genre’s hallmark traits: a whimsical treatment of sensual themes, deployment of rich and intricate brushwork, and an infusion of pastel hues. St. John paints Drag Queens, Trans models, and pairs them alongside antique porcelain figurines, trinkets and phantoms in his eclectic world rooted in classical painting. Some of his portraits he even renders into porcelain statues, snuff boxes and lockets, freezing them in time.
