Phillips presents SEEING RED, a selling exhibition curated by Jane Neal and Fru Tholstrup, featuring over 70 works by 40 artists exploring how we ‘see red’. A bold and evocative hue, the colour red holds deep emotive and cultural significance for many communities, symbolising luck, joy, passion, danger, love, and more. Throughout history, red has played a significant role in spiritual rituals, adorned cave walls, and held deep-rooted cultural and emotional importance.

Associated with warmth and richness, red is also linked to power, as seen in its use by politicians and royalty. SEEING RED encourages personal reflection on how we ‘see red’ and the symbolic meaning of the colour red.

Visitors to the exhibition are invited to reflect on different artistic interpretations of ‘seeing red’, with highlights including works by Marina Abramović, Alma Berrow, Lara Bohinc, Dale Chihuly, Martin Eder, Alexis Soul-Gray, Fredrikson Stallard, and David Brian Smith, among others. Further highlights of this immersive experience include poetry by LionHeart, jewellery designed by Stephen Webster and a bespoke scent created by Azzi Glasser. SEEING RED will be on display in Phillips London Galleries on Berkeley Square from 16 to 24 March.

SEEING RED is a dynamic exhibition born from the curators’ shared passion for championing artistic independence and individuality. This exhibition brings together established figures and emerging talents, fostering an environment that values innovation. The works showcased in the exhibition are united in their examination of the notion of ‘SEEING RED’ and when presented in the exhibition alongside one another, create a dialogue that encourages viewers to reassess the current art landscape and its connection with the remarkable talents on display.

From painting and sculpture to poetry, jewellery and scent, this exhibition presents visitors with an experience to stimulate all the senses. Unconstrained by traditional norms, SEEING RED welcomes mavericks and forward-thinkers, offering a collective platform secured by meritocracy, shaping the future luminaries of the art world, and delving into the emotions that colour our lives.

This exhibition serves as a re-examination of contemporary art, emphasising an artist’s autonomy in an increasingly prescriptive art world. Beyond the visual, SEEING RED engages other senses, providing a unique perspective on art that transcends traditional boundaries.

Jane Neal and Fru Tholstrup, Curators, said, “Simply put, SEEING RED felt like the most apt title for a show in today’s world. It sets the tone for a bold and visceral exhibition that quickens the pulse and captures the zeitgeist. We’ve sought to challenge the monopoly that has been at work in the art world, inviting artists that we admire for their individuality, as well as for their reputation. We’ve strived to be inclusive – you’ll find a number of interdisciplinary artists as well as well as more established names. Most of all, we wanted to create an exhibition for people to relish and recall as a moment that marked a shift in sensibility. A show that delights the senses and provokes wonder – perhaps even awe in our turbulent times.”

Exhibited artists include:
