Joy – The emotion of great delight or happiness caused by something exceptionally good or satisfying; keen pleasure; elation.
Scottish artist, Craig Black best known for his bold and technically innovative artworks collaborated with award-winning cabinet maker, David Watson to create The Fusion Series – JOY Chair.
This unique one-of-a-kind armchair features a mesmerising hand-painted acrylic fusion technique across the European Oak framework. The paint is an infusion of colours meticulously poured over the arms and legs of the armchair to create an eye-catching dripping paint look which was then finished with a matte varnish.
Creating the artwork for David’s beautifully crafted armchair was a joy in itself. It was a slow and meticulous process using the acrylic fusion technique and that time spent was incredibly exciting bringing the artwork to life.
Craig began working on the furniture artwork during the lockdown as a way of introducing positivity and excitement in his life during such a period when most hobbies and activities were forbidden; hence the theme of “Joy”.
The laser-cut plywood typography of the word “JOY” is hand-painted in various sizes representing the many exciting moments in life that can bring us so much joy. The three-dimensional typography is attached to the underside of the legs and arms of the chair in turn creating a 360-degree experience of the furniture artwork.
It has been a pleasure seeing how Craig has taken my simple design and transformed it into a stunning work of art.
The framework of the armchair beautifully crafted by cabinet maker David Watson is inspired by the structure of the Finnieston Crane based in Scotland, the largest remaining cantilever structure built to load locomotives onto ships for export around the world.
With a unique free rotating back covered in faux fur fabric, designed to maximise lumber support and comfort, this extremely comfortable armchair is completely handcrafted using a combination of traditional and modern techniques to create a simple yet engaging design.
Combining their love of craft and passion for art, this collaboration has created a wonderful piece of furniture artwork.
