Howard Greenberg Tambien exhibition was born from the collaboration between Jorge Fernández and Natalie Rich, from the Ibizan gallery Galería Tambien and the Howard Greenberg Gallery in New York. The American dealer has made his photographic collection, one of the most important in the world, available to the duo of gallerists so that they can carefully select the images that make up the exhibition.
This is an unprecedented event in the Balearic Islands, as it brings together in a single space works by some of the greatest photographers of the last century: Henri de Cartier-Bresson, William Klein, Mary Ellen Mark, and Wim Wenders, among others. The exhibition can be visited from July 12 to September 30 in the gallery space in Ibiza. Natalie Rich and Jorge Fernández have selected a wide range of 20th-century documentary photography, typical of the Howard Greenberg gallery program.
The chosen artists are among the most recognized, popular, and important in history, all of them pioneers in some way: in the use of color, the exploration of the ties that unite painting and photography, in the portrayal of the marginalized in society, or in their improbable and risky frames.
The works of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Mark Citret, Bruce Davidson, Frank Gohlke, Harry Gruyaert, Charles Jones, William Klein, Saul Leiter, Mary Ellen Mark, Joel Meyerowitz, Aaron Siskind, and Wim Wenders will showcase the union between the sensibilities of the Balearic and New York galleries. This exhibition is set to mark a milestone for Ibiza, helping to establish the island as an important destination for photographic exhibitions.
Located in the privileged area of Santa Gertrudis, chosen by Rich and Fernández for its cosmopolitan character, the exhibition is expected to become a mecca this summer for collectors, curious individuals, art lovers, and photographers seeking references and inspiration.
The themes of the images range from aesthetic to emotional, spanning nostalgia to impertinence, introspection to activism, with a strong emphasis on experimentation and discovery. By juxtaposing these pictures in the same space, new connections, inspirations, and unexpected echoes emerge. For instance, the veil of the girl posing in the street for Mary Ellen Mark recalls the one worn by the model smoking a cigarette in William Klein’s snapshot. Frank Gohlke’s lonely storefronts almost appear as black and white versions of Wim Wenders’ snapshots of the American West from his field trip to Paris, Texas.
These similarities create a common thread through which to explore the history of photography over the last century, largely shaped by Howard Greenberg’s lifelong work: highlighting the contributions of great pioneers and rescuing lesser-known photographers from obscurity. Now, these rediscovered artists hold a place of honor in the history of photography.
The protagonists of these images are intriguing, fascinating, and moving characters. They range from casual and daring to shy and almost suspicious in the most intimate images. In some cases, they seem oblivious to the camera’s presence, as seen in Cartier-Bresson’s work, where it feels as if the artist has captured a stolen moment from oblivion.
The settings vary: intimate, interior, and confidential, as well as open, public, and vast. Some images even straddle both worlds, as Joel Meyerowitz‘s photographs reveal. Thus, the exhibition invites us to explore reality, question our perceptions, imagine alternative narratives, and bring hidden meanings and buried emotions to light. In essence, it is a visual anthology that encourages a different way of seeing the world, highlighting the beauty, poetry, and uniqueness found in the smallest things.
