Levings Vander Voort is pleased to present Enter & Exit: Select Works from the Ext Art Portfolios, an exhibition honoring and celebrating the artists of the now closed Exit Art Gallery. The presentation comes from a private collection who acquired these pieces as a former member of the Exit Art board.
This will be Levings Vander Voort’s first exhibition of 2024. From 1982 to 2012, Jeanette Ingberman and Papo Colo owned and operated Exit Art Gallery, a non-profit gallery space that existed to push artistic boundaries and challenge the status quo. As a way to fund their entity, they created an annual print initiative that brought six to eight artists together to create portfolios.
Prints are typically ranked lower among their original counterparts, but for many artists, prints were a jumping off point into creating other works that they are more known for. Prints offered artists the chance to experiment within their artmaking and share their narratives with the world.
Enter & Exit aims to help bring the story of Exit Art back into the art historical canon and celebrate the early beginnings of its artists that now have established careers in the art world. For the exhibition, the curatorial team has identified works by artists that have experienced extraordinary success in their artistic careers. Highlighting these artists pays tribute to the printmaking process and showcases the artist’s work at different stages of their careers.
