PLAN X presents ‘Do Not Over Inflate’, the debut solo exhibition of British artist Alistair Canvin exploring absurdity and perception through subversive photorealistic painting. Through 7 new original works, the series parodies the tone of the world concealing fragility and fear, beneath a distracting veneer of color and naïveté.
With nostalgia as the context, Canvin disturbs the memories of childhood freedoms with adult limitations. Expect inflated life vests associated with rescue at sea floating in crystal blue swimming pools. While portraits elevate unimportant subjects (inflatable plastic plugs) to parody hype culture and mainstream distraction, satirically cautioning us…”Do Not Over Inflate”.
Beyond the subject, the inflatables offer a vehicle to provoke a more personal response. Introducing absurd situations in close proximity, Canvin relegates the importance of narrative to focus on composition and color. Without storytelling, the audience are encouraged to explore their own histories and perspectives through his vivid and familiar triggers.
