Lyndsey Ingram is delighted to present the gallery’s first solo exhibition of paintings and sculptures by English-Indian artist Tanya Ling. The exhibition debuts an entirely new body of work and will be accompanied by an illustrated publication and interview by Dr Gilda Williams.
The exhibition is titled Incitatus. Ling has made work which responds to both her lifelong love of horses as well as the Lyndsey Ingram gallery at Number 16, a converted 19th century stable. The title stems from this Greek word which has dual meanings; one of which – in a religious context – means to love one another deeply according to the apostle Peter, and the other to the action of a horse at full gallop.
When I’m working there are disciplined moments, and then feral ones. My work combines elements of drowning, elements of flying… for me it’s like I’m in the work itself. But the finished work becomes one thing, not many.

It also refers to the horse Incitatus who belonged to the Roman Emperor Caligula. Incitatus lived in Ancient Rome and, according to some historians, was so beloved by the Emperor that he lived in a marble stall and ate oats mixed with gold flakes out of an ivory manger.
The notion of a horse at full gallop is used by Ling as a metaphor for the deep love and care that she applies to her painting process – for these smaller-scale oil paintings, she has, like the galloping horse, stretched herself out, creating complex compositions where lines burst in and out of the canvas in broad strokes. Yet working on this smaller scale she also compares her work to the equine discipline dressage; creating a controlled dance of movements which rely on close observation and movement within the works. Each painting, named after horses, has, like animals, a unique character and temperament.
Tanya Ling: Incitatus opens on the 27th of January, 2025 until the 14th of March, 2025 at Lyndsey Ingram
