In her practice, multidisciplinary artist Gab Bois is inspired by influences from her childhood turning imaginary scenarios and settings into real experiences – and now, into real products. In 2023, Gab Bois extended her offerings of collectible items by releasing her own campy approach to Ready-to-Wear with a capsule entitled Canapés, a tongue-in-cheek reference to her business model: small bites, small quantities, simple pleasures.
The first drop of Canapés was inspired by the overwhelming response to a rhubarb purse Gab created in 2020, which was originally intended as a creative concept only. The Rhubarb drop in December 2023 features two pieces: a knit blend sweater adorned with a graphic print using DTG technology and a purse constructed from 3D models of real rhubarb leaves. These wearable art objects are an extension of Gab Bois’s signature visual language, notably deriving from her use of food props in her photography work. Canapés was born out of the artist’s desire to offer an immersive experience to her audience, and allow them to own a piece of her universe.
The second drop of Canapés, called the Clementine Collection, pays a zesty homage to the clementine and features a knit cotton sweater with a clementine graphic print and heeled sandals with a PVC strap, ABS hand-painted heels, and leather uppers & laces, made in Italy by expert craftsmen. The heels of the sandals are made from 3D models of real clementines. As with the first collection drop of Canapés, the items comprising the Clementine Collection will be available in limited quantities in line with the brand’s conscious ethos, and to offer exclusivity to its clientele.
Gab Bois’s frustration with the prevalence of fast fashion, overconsumption and the rapid digestion of images and art, now more accessible than ever on social media, ignited her desire to create fashion items that are not only statement conversation pieces, but standalone art objects. Additionally, sustainability is top-of-mind for production: the manufacturing of the collection bridges the gap between the quality of conventional luxury craftsmanship and novel technological innovations, a huge point of interest for the artist and, certainly, consumers alike.
The Clementine Collection is a manifestation of inspiration drawn from multiple facets of the fruit, including its symbolism, visual allure, and everyday significance. At its core, the clementine symbolizes good fortune and shared experiences, making it a poignant emblem of togetherness. Its intrinsic nature as a fruit that’s often enjoyed in the company of others underscores the sense of community and connection it represents. Beyond its symbolic value, the clementine’s visual appeal is undeniable. Its juicy texture and vibrant colors evoke a sensory delight that is both enticing and refreshing. These qualities serve as a driving force behind the creation of this collection, capturing the essence of vitality and vibrancy that the fruit embodies.
The meticulous process of developing the Clementine Collection spanned over three years, reflecting a dedication to craftsmanship and attention to detail. For the development of the sandals, European artisans were enlisted to help bring the vision to life, ensuring that every element of the shoes met the highest standards of quality and design.
This deliberate approach allowed Gab Bois to refine and perfect the collection until it truly encapsulated her creative vision, and the Clementine Collection stands as a testament to the fusion of inspiration, craftsmanship, and meaningful symbolism.
The collection will become available on May 17th, 2024.
