An International Women’s Day exhibition titled ‘Spirit of Boudica’ will take place at the Norwich School’s Crypt Gallery at Norwich Cathedral. The exhibition will take place from 7th to 16th March, and is curated by Lee Sharrock. The featured artists are; Chloe McCarrick, Daisy Campbell, Amy Gardner, Emma Loizides, Eva Yates, Kristjana S Williams, Lauren Baker, Lee Sharrock, Louise Richardson, Lucy Smallbone, Miranda Donovan, Nadine Talalla, Ottilia, Poppy Lennox, Toni Gallagher, Trish Wylie and Yurim Gough.

‘Spirit of Boudica’ will open at the Crypt Gallery at Norwich Cathedral in Norfolk on International Women’s Day. Inspired by Boudica, Queen of the ancient British Iceni in what is now known as Norfolk, the exhibition will feature paintings, drawings and prints inspired by the legacy of the ancient Warrior Queen.
In AD 60 Queen Boudica’s husband Prasutagus, King of the Iceni, died with no male heir, leaving his private wealth to his two daughters and to the emperor Nero, trusting that this donation would grant him imperial protection for his family. However, instead of protecting his family, the Romans annexed Prasutagus’s kingdom, humiliated his family, and plundered the chief tribesmen.
“My curation of the International Women’s Day AOAP auction is themed around Boudica, Queen of the ancient British Iceni tribe. Boudica, meaning ‘Victorious Woman’, comes from Brythonic *boudi ‘victory, win’ and kā meaning ‘having’.
The brief I gave the artists was to create artworks inspired by Boudica’s image, spirit or strength, depicting women from history of modern-day Warrior women who continue the fight for gender equality, independence and freedom, or women who have made a contribution to society in a public way, or in a more personal way on a family or friend level. It’s been so inspiring to see how each artist has interpreted the theme, some in abstract and some in more figurative ways.” Curator Lee Sharrock
So Queen Boudica led an uprising throughout East Anglia against the conquering forces of the Roman Empire, and her followers burned Camulodunum (Colchester), Verulamium (St. Albans), the mart of Londinium (London), and several military posts. Boudica left an enduring legacy as a significant cultural symbol of the struggle for justice and independence for the British. Her actions opened the world’s eyes to the capabilities of female leaders, showing that they could be strong, brave, determined leaders in what was a very male-dominated patriarchal society.

Norwich Cathedral dates back to 1096, when it was founded by Herbert de Losinga, the first Bishop of Norwich, and over the last nine centuries this magnificent place of worship has been at the heart of Norwich and its people. The Crypt Gallery in the Cathedral close is part of the Norwich School.
