Opening on 11th April, ‘RETRO FUTURE’ is artist VIctoria V. Nunley’s exploration of how we experience time. She paints worlds where visual elements from long ago are woven into those which are not-yet defined—the imagined aesthetics of a time that may never be, and never quite was.
The work is inspired by old technology, vintage fonts and visual languages from the golden age of American animation. These elements contrast with modern haircuts, futuristic colour palettes, neon signs, as well as visual components of Japanese animation.
I was thinking about old school detective fiction, like Raymond Chandler and Dashiell Hammett. In their stories, often the solution to the mystery is almost inconsequential, and rarely is there any lawful justice. The case is solved, and the detective’s life goes on. Nothing ever truly changes.”

‘The detective in a noir film.’
The “protagonist” is styled in a western-style lambskin coat as they tumble through the mystery of time itself, trying to decipher how the past informs the future. We can imagine the detective in a noir film, left to interpret clues and nuances Nunley has placed within the work. Nunley’s skills as a storyteller unfold before the viewer, inviting them to step inside the scenes, uncovering emotions in themselves. Finding the line between past and future is the ultimate mystery, and how one impacts the other is impossible to say.
Victoria V Nunley was born in New Jersey in 1991. She currently lives and works in the Washington DC area and holds an M.F.A. in Painting from Boston University, Boston, Massachusetts; and a B.A. in Studio Art with Highest Honors from Brandeis University, Waltham, Massachusetts.
