The SKATEROOM collaborates with Mickalene Thomas, Tom of Finland Foundation, and Cindy Sherman

Since 2014, THE SKATEROOM has collaborated with the world’s most influential artists to create skate collections and empower international skate and education nonprofits and projects. As a proud B Corp, THE SKATEROOM follows a social entrepreneurship model and actively works to improve sustainability and transparency in their work.

This summer, THE SKATEROOM is launching limited edition skate decks with globally renowned artists Mickalene Thomas, Tom of Finland Foundation, and Cindy Sherman.

Thomas’s mixed-media paintings, photographs, films, and installations not only fill spaces but also explore the nuanced intersections of Black and female identities in the Western canon. Beyond her practice, Thomas is a Tony Award-nominated co-producer, curator, educator, and mentor to emerging artists. She curates exhibitions, collaborates with brands, and in 2023, became the first Black female artist to have a scholarship named after her at the Yale School of Art.

Thomas has collaborated with THE SKATEROOM to release two triptychs (Afro Goddess Looking Forward & Din Avec La Main Dans Le Miroir Et Jupe Rouge) and two single decks (Din, Un Tres Belle Negresse #2 & Color Flower Pattern).

Tom of Finland X THE SKATEROOM

Encountering the work of Tom of Finland (1920-1991) is always a memorable experience. His sexually explicit drawings, depicting the male form in a range of scenarios from subtly suggestive to overtly erotic, provoke reactions of awe, curiosity, shock, or amusement. Tom of Finland meticulously crafted his works not merely to incite controversy but to provide gay men with a new perspective on their identities, celebrating love, pride, and freedom.

Finland’s aim was to empower and inspire both the gay community and the heterosexual world to embrace these values. Even three decades after his death, his influence remains globally significant.

Cindy Sherman X THE SKATEROOM

THE SKATEROOM reunites with Cindy Sherman for a second skate art collection. Cindy Sherman, renowned for her mastery of disguise, previously showcased her transformative abilities in an earlier collaboration.

The success of that collection paved the way for this eagerly awaited follow-up. Introducing the new Cindy Sherman collection, launched exclusively at Art Basel and now available worldwide. The untitled stills, some of Sherman’s most iconic works, offer a commentary on women’s lives and their portrayals in popular culture.

Each skate deck edition transports viewers into a cinematic world, featuring characters with diverse appearances and expressions, all captured in specific scenes that exude filmic dynamism despite their stillness.

For fifty years, Sherman has been a chameleon, telling stories and expressing emotions with unparalleled creativity and style. This new selection, presented in two solo decks and two triptychs, is a testament to her enduring vision and impact.
