Phillips to Release Limited-Edition Tom of Finland Lithograph
Tom of Finland Hunting, 1978/2025 (detail)

A rare, previously unreleased lithograph by Tom of Finland debuts as Phillips’ first time-limited edition, with proceeds supporting the Tom of Finland Foundation.

Phillips has announced Tom of Finland as the featured artist for its June 2025 Drop, which will introduce the platform’s first time-limited edition. The two-colour lithograph, titled Hunting, will be made available for purchase from 17 June at 10 a.m. ET until 1 July at 10 a.m. ET through dropshop.phillips.com. Each print is priced at $600.

The edition was created in collaboration with Cirrus Editions, a master printmaking studio based in Los Angeles. Working from a rare surviving proof held in the Tom of Finland Foundation’s archive, the image was enlarged and transferred to new lithographic plates, enabling this previously unreleased work to be printed for the first time.

A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Tom of Finland Foundation and its range of arts programmes, including the Artist-in-Residence Programme. The residency offers artists an immersive experience that fosters creative freedom, supports emerging talent, and provides space to develop their work in a historically significant environment.

Born Touko Valio Laaksonen, Tom of Finland is widely recognised for his influential role in Gay art and culture. His distinctive, highly stylised drawings of hypermasculine men challenged the norms of the mid-20th century, offering a bold and celebratory vision of Gay identity. Beyond influencing visual culture, his work played a key role in the broader recognition and visibility of LGBTQ+ communities.

In Hunting, Tom of Finland uses a pared-back, two-tone composition to heighten both depth and tension between the two figures, capturing the charged energy that defines much of his work. While best known for his ink, pencil and pastel drawings, he occasionally experimented with printmaking techniques such as linocuts during the 1980s. As he once remarked, he deliberately chose compositions that could remain on view even “when mother comes to visit.”

Hunting will be offered exclusively through dropshop.phillips.com.
