Galleri Glas has the honor of presenting the exhibition New York 1974 with photographer Lennart Durehed. It has been 50 years since Durehed captured his iconic images of New York, a city that at the time was on the verge of bankruptcy. Now, half a century later, these images are shown for the first time in Stockholm.

Durehed had just finished his education at the Photography School in Gothenburg when he ended up in New York as an assistant to the famous photographer Irving Penn. In addition to working in Penn’s studio, Durehed wandered the city in the early mornings, documenting places like Brooklyn, Central Park, Coney Island, and The Village—areas that would soon undergo major changes.

When Durehed returned to Sweden in 1976, the pictures were packed away in the archive. Now, after being rediscovered in the spring of 2023, these photographs finally get to meet their audience. A selection was shown during the summer at Vida Konsthall, Öland, and now they are exhibited at Galleri Glas in Stockholm.

The exhibition is co-curated by Staffan Bengtsson, who together with Durehed has also produced a book with newly written texts and a larger selection of the images.

“No one was a stranger in New York in the 70s. There was no gap between us and the city and that is what Lennart’s pictures reflect”. Says Staffan Bengtsson, co-curator of the exhibition at Galleri Glas.

Experience these unique and time-documentary photographs at Galleri Glas, which depict a New York in change and convey the city’s dynamism during a period of both decay and renewal.
