The Brooklyn-based artist stages an evening-length work in peep show booths, blending pop nostalgia, family history and explorations of power.

Abrons Arts Center will present the premiere of A Devotion to Service, a new evening-length work by the performance artist Kat Sotelo, on 26 and 27 September at the Experimental Theatre.

The piece, staged in mobile peep show booths, explores the intersections of eroticism and servitude, Catholic and Filipino identities, and the dynamics of power and pleasure. Drawing on choreography from Sotelo’s childhood dance recitals, as well as physical comedy, video and pop music, the performance aims to subvert traditional ideas of authority within individuals, cultures and communities.

Audiences will be invited to enter the booths before the performance begins. Alongside Sotelo, the work features four performers — including the artist’s father — as well as a rotating group of non-performers recruited shortly before each show through online platforms and power-exchange networks.

Sotelo, a first-generation Filipino American artist based in Brooklyn, is currently an artist-in-residence at Movement Research, the Centre for Performance Research and GALLIM Dance Company, and a Hybrid Arts Lab Fellow at Theater Mitu. Their work often engages with voyeurism, kink and spectacle, using the body as a site of commerce and memory.
