Portrait Milano is delighted to announce that British artist Julian Opie will be exhibiting Walking in Milan this summer at Piazza del Quadrilatero. Curated by Valentina Ciarallo, eight new sculptures of walking figures have been created by Opie exclusively for the hotel and will be on show from 3 July.
Julian Opie is internationally recognised for interpreting the aesthetics of everyday reality through a distinctive, minimal style using linear contours and contrasting block colours. Opie is known for his fusion of new technologies with art historical themes and using the human body as his muse. He has achieved popular acclaim for his worldwide public projects as well as his various commissions including his iconic album design for the British rock band Blur in 2000.
Walking in Milan will feature common pedestrians as the artistic protagonists. Inspired by the most natural and commonly seen form of human movement, Opie’s sculptures will reflect the rhythm of everyday reality and colourfully celebrate the beauty of the mundane. The stationary figures caught in motion will simultaneously invite encounter and aggregation with the real-life passersby of the Piazza del Quadrilatero.
Opie’s Walking in Milan renews Portrait Milano’s commitment to cultivate an open, welcoming and inclusive destination, providing the city with a space to nurture creativity and introduce artistic ideas to new and international audiences. Portrait Milano’s Piazza del Quadrilatero previously hosted photographer’s Jimmy Nelson exclusive prints installed over the large six-metre windows in-between the 16th Century columns of the Loggia of the former Seminary.
Julian Opie: Walking in Milan opens on the 3rd July, 2024 until the 27th of August, 2024 at Portrait Milano
