José María Yturralde (b. 1942, ES) presents his third solo exhibition, Hyades, with Ruttkowski;68 in Paris. The exhibition brings together two closely connected bodies of work – Enso and Entanglements – which continue to traverse the converging realms between perception and idea, geometry and emotion, science and spirituality.
The Enso series, ongoing since 2014, is rooted in the ancient and universal symbolism of the circle – and its spatial extension, the sphere. Both represent perfection, cosmic rhythm, and the cycles of nature. Each painting is a meditative yet precise gesture, inspired by Zen painting and its understanding of the relationship between emptiness and form.

In Yturralde’s work, the circle transcends its shape to become a spiritual practice – a way of flowing with life beyond entropy. The Entanglements series is inspired by the enigmatic harmony of the natural world and the phenomena explored by quantum theory — entanglement, superposition, the mirroring of actions across vast distances. Here, Yturralde paints invisible resonances: undulating fields, energy trajectories, and the geometries of interconnectedness. These forms evoke not only physical phenomena but also mystical insight across cultures — illumination as both a scientific and spiritual event.

Echoing Barnett Newman’s claim “the sublime is now”, Yturralde proposes painting as a tool of inquiry, locating the sublime in the immediacy of the present. In this liminal space, art becomes sensual knowledge in the dynamic interplay of entropy and form.
