In the Studio, a new book series from Hauser & Wirth Publishers, offers an intimate look at artists’ practices, spaces, and creative lives

Hauser & Wirth Publishers has launched a new book series that invites readers into the often-guarded spaces where art is made and ideas take shape. In the Studio, as the series is aptly titled, offers intimate, sharply observed portraits of influential artists through the eyes of leading scholars and critics.

These slim, elegantly designed volumes serve as both introductions and companion pieces—each one a portal into the artist’s creative world. Richly illustrated and thoughtfully composed, they offer readers more than biography or critique. They trace the arc of artistic development, the texture of materials, and the disciplined chaos of the studio itself.

The series opens with three distinct voices in modern and contemporary art: Phyllida Barlow, whose large-scale, rough-hewn sculptures reshaped the language of form; Jack Whitten, a painter whose abstractions absorbed decades of American history; and Lee Lozano, the radical conceptualist whose brief, intense career continues to challenge and inspire.

Forthcoming volumes will turn their gaze towards Berlinde De Bruyckere, known for haunting sculptural meditations on the human condition; Paul McCarthy, the provocateur whose work unsettles as much as it reveals; and Louise Bourgeois, whose towering legacy remains a vital touchstone in the story of twentieth-century art.

More than a survey, In the Studio offers a quiet, focused look into the places where art takes shape—inviting us to linger, to look more closely, and to better understand what it means to create.
