Before the dawn of social media and the omnipresence of smartphones, photographer and skateboarder Patrick O’Dell encapsulated the irreverent spirit of the NYC skateboarding, music and downtown scene in his celebrated blog Epicly Later’d. The blog quickly established itself as a countercultural phenomenon and offered a riotous snapshot of the youth culture of the early ’00s with its unfiltered approach to photography far ahead of its time. A time capsule capturing the tongue-in-cheek wit and the intimate portraiture of O’Dell’s subjects, Epicly Later’d continues to influence photography, art, and skate culture to this day.

Wayward youth and joy and oblivion—here are all the moments I remember and many that I don’t! Patrick’s exacting eye for the fractured beauty in our shared chaos
captured it all. – Chloë Sevigny

Nearly twenty years later, some of the most iconic images from Epicly Later’d are published as a photography book by Anthology Editions. Compiled by O’Dell and editor Jesse Pearson with an introduction by Amy Kellner, the book collects some of the highlights of the blog into a body of work that is as fresh and immensely compelling as ever featuring some familiar faces from the scene including Chloe Sevigny, Benjamin Cho, Tino Razo and more. The hedonistic haze of post-9/11 New York is prevalent across the euphoric images of O’Dell, drawing an evocative portrait of the creative scene in the city and capturing a definitive era of New York history.
