Cuban photographer Nana del Riego and Mexican artist Demián “Chango” Mohar have teamed up to create the Iconoclassic Series. A new series of works focuses on the artist’s shared subject matters of mass consumption, cultural appropriation, and aesthetic appropriation, which are crucial to both artists and their practice.

Del Riego and Monhar‘s new series is an intriguing combination of street art and candid photography, giving audiences a glimpse into the world of both artists and how their unique styles come together.

Nana del Riego is best known for her vivid, provocative scenes that explore the use and abuse of the female body as an object. Influenced by Cindy Sherman, Annie Leibovitz, and David LaChapelle, del Riego draws inspiration from advertisements, magazines, tabloids, and social media.

Throughout her work, she deconstructs and reconstructs identities using images to create pressing scenes that reflect a unique visual perspective on the female experience, primarily through self-portraits employing the female body as a metaphor for modernity.

Life experiences, culture, and travel inspire Demián “Chango” Mohar’s work. Each piece he creates is a paradox between the foreign and the personal, the external and the intimate: the city, the street, the image, and memory, underpinned by the essence of street art. Mohar’s canvases are saturated with symbols, cultural blends, and a fusion of images and forms that represent Contemporary Mexico.

Del Riego says,” Iconoclassic is the mix between the words Iconoclasm, Classic and Icon. The action of him [Chango] painting on top of my artwork is a ludic way of creating a contemporary iconoclastic action, and the words Icon and Classic unite in the sense that it was our intention to use and incorporate various iconic personalities such as Queen Elizabeth, Virgin Mary or Marilyn Monroe for me, and traditional Mexican cartoon characters, brand logos, famous bands or typical catch phrases in the form of graffiti for him.”
