Alternative Arts presents a vibrant collection of photographs by Black British photographers, showcasing works from their consecutive Black History Month exhibitions held in 2021, 2022, and 2023.

This exhibition celebrates contemporary Black British culture and identity, offering a rich visual narrative that spans different generations and perspectives. Curated by Alternative Arts’ Director Maggie Pinhorn, alongside acclaimed East End photographer Sarah Ainslie, the exhibition is a journey through visual storytelling, amplifying the voices of both emerging and established photographers.

The exhibition is live online throughout October in honor of Black History Month, providing audiences with the opportunity to explore this dynamic body of work. Each image is accompanied by information on the photographer and thoughtful context, adding depth to the stories captured.

Photographers include:

  • Bettina Adela, whose work captures powerful moments from the 2016 Black Lives Matter March for Libya in London.
  • Asiko, who delves into the cultural significance and history of African hairstyles.
  • Chris Batantu, offering a unique perspective shaped by his challenging upbringing, framing the world through a different lens.
  • Rio Blake, known for intimate portraits taken during Notting Hill Carnival, capturing moments of joy and celebration.
  • Raymond Daley, documenting the rich expressions of African and Caribbean culture across London.
  • Tzion Essel, who presents emotionally charged images inspired by the theme of melancholy.
  • Marlan Henry, focusing on everyday moments between Black fathers and their children, offering a tender look into family life.

Supported by Alternative Arts and Tower Hamlets Council, this exhibition reflects Alternative Arts’ commitment to championing new voices, fostering cultural experiences, and investing in artistic expression. Throughout its history, Alternative Arts has been at the forefront of creative regeneration in areas such as Covent Garden, Spitalfields, and East London, continuing to lead in arts development and community engagement.
