The culmination of a year’s exhibitions, events and experiences, Work in Progress will honour the artists whose creativity adorns the gallery walls to make Helm the vibrant, contemporary space that it is. Helm Gallery has been lauded both by local and regional communities, with its unique commitment to inspiring events, exhibitions and its ethos to platform emergent and burgeoning artists on a global scale, earning such high profile press coverage as the Guardian and BBC News, among others.

At the same time, Helm is thrilled to have thrived commercially in an art market that has proven widely challenging, even in its first year, a period when any cultural business would be finding its feet. Sell out shows have included a solo exhibition by Margot in Margate as well as Mr Men Reimagined, in one year the gallery has shipped art to 21 countries around the globe, and Helm is excited to have recently launched a brand-new podcast series, “Jo Brooks at the Helm,” hosted by Jo Brooks, the powerhouse publicist behind some of the most impactful artists in recent memory.

True to Helm’s commitment to reimagine and demystify the art gallery experience, Work in Progress represents the gallery’s desire to share space, platform artists and offer amazing experiences. As part of the exhibition programme, between 6 and 8 September, Helm will be transformed into a blank canvas once again. For Work in Progress, you will be transported to the studios of nine artists from around the world, all under one roof, working across a variety of mediums and styles to create brand-new works of art, live, whilst open to the public.

Each with their own space in the gallery to work from, visitors will have the chance to meet those at the cutting edge of contemporary art and to see first-hand their artwork coming to life. Contrasting with the idea of work being created behind closed studio doors, this exciting and dynamic exhibition will engage visitors with the creative process of each artist as an individual, giving insight to their techniques, materials and space – and creating connection.

Helm’s refreshing ethos is to be a destination for people of all walks to discover and engage with contemporary art. Visitors are invited to enjoy a host of exhibitions, talks, performances and workshops and to build an art collection within a social space…where they can also enjoy a coffee or cocktail. Founded in 2023 by curator Eden Maseyk and entrepreneur Luke Davis, Helm Gallery in Brighton is the result of a collective vision; one that aims to provide a never-before seen arts and exhibition space, situated at the heart of the cultural-quarter of one of the country’s
most creative cities.
