SCORCH: Dykes Gaze Back presents a series of portraits exploring the lesbian gaze, subverting the spectre of old master’s passive muses; and instead recentering queer bodies of today—drag kings, dyke culture, and the creativity of lived queer experience to forefront.

Radiating with queer presence and agency, this exhibition takes you inside the experience of sitting for a portrait, behind the frame, to uncover the scorch of shared looking, the gaze of mutual recognition.

Using painting as a liminal space, a new kind of intimacy, SCORCH’ explores the gaze as a catalyst of transformation that creates both a bond between artist, subject and viewer, an alchemical dynamic captured alongside the oil on canvas. Tingay’s work disrupts any attempt to categorise the queer subject withing gender norms, painting not in statics, but aflame, in flux.
