Jarvis Brookfield: Julanite

“Julanite,” is Jarvis Brookfield‘s latest solo exhibition at 67A York Street in Marylebone, London. The exhibition takes the viewer on an imaginative journey through themes of spiritualism, and psychedelia, featuring large-scale paintings that showcase Brookfield’s fascination with the inner landscapes of the mind. Brookfield’s artwork is a celebration of the boundless nature of the imagination. Drawing inspiration from Henry Corbin’s essay, “The Mundus Imaginalis,” he delves into the concept of a “place of images in suspense,” which exists between spiritual realms and the sensory world – a ‘place’ that is as ontologically real as the world we perceive.
At the heart of the exhibition lie two prominent pieces, “Julanite” and “Nagoram,” both created during the late summer of 2022 which catalysed this body of work. The overarching theme centres around an imaginative vision of a jungle at night. However, viewers are invited to leave behind representational perspectives and immerse themselves in a fluid, energetic, and amorphous narrative where images are
stirred and blown by an inner cosmic wind, becoming visible in the mind’s eye. Within this otherworldly ambiance, dynamic, colourful and diaphanous forms emerge from the depths, shrouded in mystery and alluring the audience.
Drawing inspiration from his explorations of the inner worlds of the mind, often revealed during altered states of consciousness like visionary psychedelic, dreamlike, and meditative states, Brookfield presents a vibrant and dynamic body of work. Julanite, extends an invitation to viewers to embark on their own journey of self-discovery, acknowledge the mysteries of life, explore their inner worlds and contemplate more of the timeless and universal aspects of our shared humanity.
