Tiburcio is already en route to a promising future by having one of her pieces, “Art Within Their Souls”, exhibited on billboards throughout southwest Florida as a part of Alliance for the Arts Art Lives 2021. A scroll of her Instagram shows her work is already part of private collections. In this interview, we learn more about the young artist aspirations, practice and more.
Q: For those who don’t know you, can you please introduce yourself?
A: My name is Khaysie Tiburcio, and I’m 16 years old. I was born in the Dominican Republic and moved to Florida when I was 6, I love it here. I’m an artist who believes art is a form of expressionism that allows me to express my emotions and messages through abstract paintings.
Q: What is your inspiration, and why do you do what you do?
A: My inspiration comes from my surroundings. Those are the people around me, the events that continue to shape me as a person, and the process of expressing myself through art.
Inspiration can appear at any moment, whether it’s from listening to music to simply closing my eyes and connecting with nature. I create art because it’s something that I love to do, it’s a form of exploration and education. There’s so much to learn in the world, so art is a way to look back upon history and review a certain event’s impact on society.
Q: Can you tell us about your creative process?
A: My creative process is ever-changing. Generally speaking, I usually prefer to start a painting with brush strokes. This adds to the uniqueness of each painting and leads me to a path with many different directions.
By differentiating directions, I refer to part of the process where I start a painting with vivid elements and scrub them off with my paint-stained rag, revealing an entirely new painting. This is the most exciting part of my painting process because it adds a new element of energy-charged emotions. A painting that has undergone the “element removal process” is “Intellectual Connection”- Within this painting, you can observe the paint and how it has a deteriorated feel to it, the gaps between the paint and canvas include bold charcoal lines which added irony to the “connection” aspect of the painting.
I enjoy experimenting with different mediums and techniques, so I always like to try something new in each painting. Not only does doing this help me learn, but it activates my imagination on what I could do next. Splashing liquids, mainly water, on the canvas has been my favorite technique so far. It allows me to manipulate paint and add different textures in their entirety.
As far as the mental process of creativity goes, I find that it’s always happening. Whether it’s looking at the wooden floors, the window patterns, or darkness, I always find a way to make a mental painting out of it, which is later added onto a physical canvas.
Throughout the years I have improved in establishing a “there are no mistakes in art’’ mentality. This has helped me tremendously when it comes to staying true to myself and making elaborate paintings.
Q: What themes are you exploring through your work?
A: I’m currently exploring emotional themes. My paintings include expressive features which portray a unique moment of either those around me or myself. I’ve also explored societal challenges that comprise, education, wealth and greed, government control, and close-mindedness.
Paintings such as, “Monkey See Monkey Do’’ and “Disconnected” represent the recurring theme where one individual does a certain action and others follow blindly without observing the possible consequences or logical solutions.
Q: What was the first piece of art you created that cemented your path as an artist?
A: “Art within their souls”- This piece was chosen by judges at ‘Alliance for the Arts’ to be displayed on a billboard throughout the entire year.
I feel that every piece of art that I create cements my path as an artist. Each painting shows a part of me and my thought process. Over the upcoming years, there will be improvement in the quality of my work but the joy that I get from painting will stay the same as when I first started.
Q: In your opinion, what is the lasting impact of Art?
A: Art captures a certain moment in time that plays a role in personal development and sometimes a crucial role in society. It’s a way to communicate your viewpoints and creativity with others.
Q: As a developing artist what do you think about the current state of the art world?
A: I think that the art world is growing and adapting rapidly. There are many digital platforms available to exhibit your work to an audience directly, whereas back then if you didn’t have the right contacts or opportunities the artist would have been confined to their personal space. Of course, viewing a piece of art online isn’t the same as viewing it in person but it has provided many opportunities to artists whose work otherwise may not have been seen.
Q: What are your thoughts on NFTs and will you be releasing digital editions of your works?
A: NFTs provide opportunities for artists to expand their market. I’ll consider releasing digital editions of my works once I reach further into my artistic career.
Q: What role does the artist have in society?
A: The artist has the role of expressing themselves. This, in result, can challenge the viewpoints of the viewer, impact them emotionally, inspire them, and give an insight into the world through their eyes.
Q: What’s next for you as an artist?
A: I would have to say, learning more about the art world and exhibiting my art to a larger audience. Since I am so young, I still believe I have many years of opportunities and experiences ahead of me.
I’m very thankful to have received advice from art collectors such as Phyllis Hollis, artists, Cristian Tiburcio and Marcus Jansen, my close friend Elias Jansen, and the support from my mother and my family
Q: Lastly, what does Art mean to you?
A: Art is joy. The happiness that comes from the process of creation is immense. Even if the painting itself is completed, the striking energy continues to persevere. It’s beautiful to think about, a canvas once blank can be created into something meaningful that brings emotions to not only the artists but everyone around them.
